Power. Influence. Command.

Ean Sangrave never thought he would have any of those things, but what a difference a year makes. Now, he’s practically king of the abandoned mine on the edge of Rottwealth, surrounded by loyal creatures from the Abyss who live to carry out his every whim. Then there are his closest friends, Zin and Azalea, his only friends, always ready and willing to bring him back to reality. They want what’s best for Ean but don’t trust in his ability to plan for the future. Their constant bickering over what they think is best has another thorn in Ean’s side.

After a failed attempt to ease the tensions between the citizens of Rottwealth and Ean’s new command of the mine, a visitor arrives with an interesting message from an unexpected source. The knowledge Ean seeks about the origins of his powers lies in the Deadlands, a place that has already taken Ean’s life once before. Should he risk all that he has worked for, to journey through mysterious lands where only fools dare to tread, in search of answers he might not want to know?

Despite a couple of items in the story that had me scratching my head I really enjoyed this book. I think there were a couple of story issues that need to be edited but besides that it was a very enjoyable read.

Spoilers:
The reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because of two items that didn't seem to flow. The first was because I didn't think Ean could travel far from Aux and that the distance he could travel was proportional to Aux's size. I probably need to go back and read the end of book two again but that was my understanding of that. The other was when they were talking to their guide from the Deadlands, the guide talked about how he had hidden in the Silent Kings capital city for decades before he was found, which was right before Ean traveled there. And then he also talked about how he had seen the fighting from before the Plague was caused. I am not sure of the time frame but I thought the Plague was caused centuries before Ean came around? So the guide would have had to hide for centuries not decades. Maybe I have the time frame wrong though?
Regardless, I enjoyed the book a lot even though it seemed a little short. It was well edited like all of Vernon's books and I liked reading about how powerful Ean was becoming. We also got a snap shot into the mind of one of the Seekers which was interesting. This has been a nice story to read as we watch the development of the main character grow from a weak person to a more powerful one.

I was pretty excited at the end of book 2 about exploring the dungeon overlord kind of aspect that was hinted going into book three. I was extremely disappointed that it was all essentially skipped as the author advances time. Dealing with new creatures and exploring his power? Skipped/extremely brief. Dealing with the town and interacting with them? Awkward and brief.

Ultimately this is copy of book 1 and 2 "lets go on an adventure!" The fact that time was advanced after book 2 makes me feel like the author is only interested in/comfortable with books that center around a journey.

Other than that its still a pretty decent series, I just feel like its missing depth, there are opportunities for the story that get passed up. It probably didn't help my evaluation of his score that there was a fairly long wait for this book and I was looking forward to it.

I'll read the next book too though.
I did like the story and waiting for the continuing! I do not believe that the characters did change or had an extensional character growth.
I loved the third instalment of this series, I just hope we dont have to wait too long for the next issue.
I really liked this book can't wait to see where the next book takes the story I will definitely buy the next book
I would love to give this book five stars because it was a fun story. The only reason I didn't was that it needed some editing. Misspelled words and errors here and there were distractions while reading. However, I loved the storytelling and the banter between the characters. I'm looking forward to devouring the next book.
Oh the stories this author weaves. What a good read. A great continuation of the series with a cliff hanger ending. Wait for the next story. Darn it.
I thought that this was a wonderful book. Ean, Azalea, and Zin just keep getting better and better. I thought that this book flowed nicely, moved along a good pace. The only problem I had with it was that I wished it was longer.
